Exploring Josiah Spode's Stoke

Join Spode Museum staff and local experts to explore the legacy of the Spode dynasty and its impact on the town of Stoke-upon-Trent. We will consider the factory site and its transport links, family connections with Stoke Minster and their commercial influence over the town's development. Find out about Spode's "Astounding Inventions", perfecting bone china and transfer printing processes. The walk will cover just a couple of miles and is expected to last around two hours. The museum will be open and free to visitors from 10am before the event.

Gladstone Pottery Museum enables visitors to experience what conditions were like for the men, women and children who worked at the centre of the world’s pottery industry. Visit the Tile Gallery featuring one of the best decorative tile collections in the country and ‘Flushed with Pride’ a remarkable gallery dedicated to the history of the toilet. A fun noisy, touchy feely display, kids will love it!

Come and discover Wedgwood’s ingenious innovations on our themed tour through the V&A Wedgwood Collection. The tour is an hour long and will be taking you from Josiah Wedgwood’s experiments in the 18th century all the way to the factory here in Barlaston. The museum is free to explore but the tour must be pre-booked. Why not complement your visit with a booking in the Tea Room where a Heritage Open Day special will be available. Short on time? Lily the food truck will be open serving Staffordshire Oatcakes and much more.

Heritage Photo Walk, Longton

The route will be approximately 1 mile along footpaths and pavements, covering Longton's heritage buildings on Market Street, Uttoxeter Road and The Strand, including the Grade II listed Victorian market, Longton Town Hall, St James' Church and Gladstone Pottery Museum.
Bring your own camera or smartphone, or borrow one of ours for the walk. Refreshments will be available at Urban Wilderness. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing for the weather forecast on the day. Please note that footpaths are uneven in places and there are limited places on the route to sit and rest.

Longton’s buildings tell the industrial tale of the development of the area and the important role it played in the pottery industry. Local historian, Phil Rowley's route takes in landmarks and some of the remaining bottle ovens of Longton. An ideal way to learn about the town’s history. Beginning and ending at Gladstone Pottery Museum car park, the tour should take around an hour and a half. Co-ordinated by the Potteries Heritage Society.

A perfect day out for someone who loves motion, mechanics, engineering and engines! This year for Heritage Open Days we're inviting everyone to come and find out more about our Steam Engine 'Duchess'. FREE access to the Steam engine on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September - see 'Duchess' under steam power, toot the steam whistle and understand how essential steam power was to the smooth running of the Factory. Our friendly Steam Team will be on hand to answer all your questions and demonstrate how it all works!

Oliver Lodge: Scientist and Spiritualist

Penkhull-born Sir Oliver Lodge was a highly regarded scientist, pioneer of radio and electromagnetic radiation, and inventor of the spark plug. Unusually, given his background, he was also a major proponent in belief in spiritualism. Local historian, Phil Rowley, presents a fascinating talk about the scientist's life and works in the village that still has a strong association with his legacy.

Guided tours at 13:00 & 15:00 each day

Join us for a tour of the church building and an exhibition of historic artefacts and pictures. The church will be open for guided or self guided tours. There will be a a trail for children and you will be able to access areas like the choir loft and cellar which are not usually open to the public. Refreshments will be available and on Sunday 18 September at 5pm our event will end with a free concert by a local acapella singing group.
