Potteries Heritage Society pays tribute to Ellis Bevan whose campaign to save Longton Town Hall was instrumental in the creation of our organisation back in 1986. Arthur Slight remembers Ellis well:
Sometimes known as "Mr Longton" for his services to the town, particularly in saving Longton Town Hall, he also had the "Mitchell Wall" created for another local hero. Ellis owned Bevan's Music Shop for 50 years, was Mayor of Stafford and later Liberal Democrat Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent. He died after a short illness on 13 August.
Ellis, together with other members of the Longton Action Group, joined with PHS members in a packed Town Hall for a celebratary dinner in 1996 to mark 10 years since saving the building and the Society's first decade. He will be sadly missed by many of our founder and long-standing members.
