A Walking Tour of Arnold Bennett's Burslem

A walk around Burslem to heritage buildings featured in the novels of Arnold Bennett, and on which we have mounted blue plaques. At each stop there will be readings featuring the building we have arrived at. The walk will include references to the Federation of the Potteries in 1910 and the subsequent City status.

An opportunity to look at the chapel once known as The Cathedral of the Potteries. It has an unusual and interesting architecture and is believed to have had the largest span of any chapel outside London at the time it was built. There will be a display of historic photographs and an exhibition of stories of local men who fought in the first world war. The organ will be played at intervals throughout the open day.

Potteries Heritage Society is opening up a wealth of information about bottle ovens. Each of the 27 bottle oven sites in Stoke-on-Trent will feature a QR code link to Bottle Oven Facts, as well as further information about bottle oven types. Over 40 pages of "Bottle Oven Facts" have been created to fit the screen of your smart phone or tablet, including all sites, oven types, locations and interactive maps.

An illustrated talk by Jon Heal about the architect Charles Barry, renowned for his work designing the Palace of Westminster, but who also designed an Italianate palace in Trentham for the 2nd Duke and Duchess of Sutherland.
Join the audience for this first opportunity to see some of the 600 plans and drawings produced by Charles Barry and his office during the remodelling of Trentham Hall for the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland in the 1830s. Together they embarked on a plan to turn Trentham into a residence befitting the status of one of the richest families in the country. Doors open at 19:00.

The Chatterley Whitfield Colliery site is acknowledged to be the most comprehensive surviving example of a deep mine site in England, with a range of surviving structures and buildings unequalled in any other former or surviving coalfield site in Britain. Not usually open to the public, this free guided tour by Chatterley Whitfield Friends will allow you to appreciate the splendid array of buildings on-site, which makes Chatterley Whitfield so unique. There is no underground access, but there is limited access to site buildings subject to the approval of the City Council. The new Heritage Centre, new Memorial Garden and Artefacts Hall will be Open. Access will be very restrictive. We are open both weekends and there will be three tours a day.
